Tips & Tricks

Maintain Your Plumbing Systems. Insurance generally covers household water damage if the damage is sudden and accidental, such as damage caused by burst pipes. However, some problems may not be covered by insurance, including ones that arise from a lack of proper maintenance to your plumbing systems.

Your Water Bill May Indicate a Plumbing Problem. Look at your water bill By comparing monthly usage figures, you may get tipped off to a small leak before it becomes a big problem. Major, unexplained fluctuations in your water bill are often a sign of water leaks.

Locate The Emergency Shut Off Valves. Emergency shut off valves are valves located under your kitchen and bathroom sinks, at your washing machine, at the toilet, and refrigerator icemaker. There are emergency shut off valves for both hot and cold water.

Most emergency shut off valves are of the gate variety and are made of materials that may fail over time. Replacement of theses valves is recommended when they are showing signs of leaking or they have "frozen" in the open position - meaning they can't be turned one way or the other.

When To Replace a Water Heater: The tank leaks, you hear a rumbling noise, the efficiency is down from where it was previously.

When to Seek Toilet Reair: If its leaking from the tank or the base. Also, if you hear a vibrating noise when flushed.

The Garbage Disposal Suddenly Stops. Check the plug under the sink to see if it's still plugged in the electrical outlet. If any object falls into the disposal.

How Not to Fix a Clogged Toilet. DO NOT attempt to snake your toilet with a wire coat hanger.

6 Reasons to Consider a Local, Professional Plumber

1. Your building or remodeling project is a large investment and the kitchen or bath often becomes the main focal point of your home. Working with a professional utilizes their skill, knowledge and experience to make that happen. Your plumber will know what products work together.

2. Faucets and sinks have to match up for proper installation. If the pieces don't fit, you may end up paying for two service calls rather than one...and, you will have to spend more time and energy tracking down the proper parts yourself.

3. Your plumber will also know if your fixture or faucet needs additional parts in order to be installed properly. For instance, some sinks need a wall bracket or special supply tubes. The plumber will know this before he arrives and will have the proper pieces with him to complete the job in one stop. Not all products sold by retailers meet the proper plumbing codes. Store personnel are not licensed plumbers and may not know this.

Your plumber will not legally be able to install these items for you and your home insurance company most likely will not cover damages resulting from a handyman, not licensed in plumbing, having incorrectly installed items or having installed items not meeting proper plumbing codes.

4. When a plumber supplies your fixtures, he is taking full responsibility for the quality of the those items. If there is a manufacturing defect or shipping damage, your plumber will get it replaced for you.

5. If there are parts missing from the box, the plumber will take care of it. You won't have to pay the plumber to wait around while you are busy running around getting additional parts for him to finish your job!

6. If your fixture or faucet develops a problem shortly after installation, your plumber will not charge you to come out and fix it if he sold you the item. He more than likely will hae to charge you for his time if the defect is a third party's responsibility.

Water Heater Maintenance Tips
Home water heaters are among the more under-appreciated conveniences of modern living. They normally provide us with comfortable showers, and we do not appreciate them until they cease functioning and our soothing showers turn ice cold.

How to Hire a Plumbing Contractor
Before you call a plumber, there are some things you can do to determine the need for one. The following items should be addressed continually and, if done, may eliminate the need to call in a plumbing contractor later.

Septic Tank Maintenance
A septic tank gone wrong can be a disaster. Make sure you are on a regular maintenance schedule with yours.

Plumbing Maintenance Checklist
Homeowners do not typically appreciate the intricacies of their homes plumbing system or the plumbing maintenance necessary to its longevity. Your home plumbing system consists of all your pipes, faucets, toilets, showers, sinks and washers, every bit of porcelain and metal that carries potable and non-potable water through behind-the-wall arteries.
